Shauney P. Lucas Scholarship Fund

The family of Shauney Lucas has established the Shauney P. Lucas Scholarship Fund. This fund is set aside for children’s scholarships for PARD programs and college scholarships for potential art students. Shauney, an employee of the Whitesboro Parks and Recreation Department, was tragically killed in an automobile accident in October, 2010 at the age of 18. Shauney was an award-winning photographer who was just beginning her studies in Visual Arts / Photography. At the time of her death, she was a student at Grayson County College, and she planned to attend Texas Women’s University.

Shauney won multiple awards for her work at the Loy Lake Photography Contests for high school students, including Grand Champion. Her greatest award was achieved in the showing at the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design at Drexel University in Pennsylvania. There were over 2,300 photographs entered in 2007 from all over the country, and only 136 images were exhibited. Her work was displayed in their photography gallery from February 2 to March 1, 2008.

Shauney worked for the Whitesboro Parks and Recreation Department for 3 ½ years. PARD Director Penny Renfroe said of Shauney, “She was an amazingly gifted and loyal employee. She was an incredibly valuable and much-loved member of our team. She began working for the PARD as a summer camp worker and continued as a building supervisor, summer camp director, PARD photographer, and special events coordinator. She loved working with children, and children loved her! She used her talent as a photographer and was instrumental in the department’s Community Art Shows.”

This year the Department is re-naming its community art show after the local photographical artist. Whitesboro’s Shauney P. Lucas Community Art Show will be held March 4 through 6 at the Jimmie O. Rector Community Center. Shauney’s work will be on special display. Pieces of her work will be available for sale; all proceeds will benefit the Shauney P. Lucas Scholarship Fund. Renfroe said of the event, “We are so proud to have found a way that her legacy will continue to inspire other artists and look forward to an opportunity for the public to view her work. She encouraged children as well as her peers to live every day to its fullest and to use their gifts and talents with creativity and vision. She was a very unique individual and will be greatly missed by her co-workers, the children in her programs, and the visitors to the Community Center.”

Ms. Lucas had recently made a trip to Africa to visit her grandparents. The trip was a great opportunity to capture her love of nature. Pictures from her Africa trip will be on display at the art show.

Shauney had a love of photography, and she was determined in her pursuit of art education. In her honor, the scholarship fund will be used to further the education of local students who share the passion for visual art. Additionally, the fund will be used for scholarships for local children to participate in the Whitesboro PARD’s programs. Karen Bain, Shauney’s mom said, “Shauney loved children, and she wanted them all to have the opportunity to be themselves. We also want to plant a garden for the summer camp children as a way for them learn and experience the growing process.”
